Navistar International
Chicago, IL: (Aug-06-07) Nearly 350 black employees brought a civil rights lawsuit against Warrenville-based Navistar International, alleging that the transportation solution company that builds trucks, engines and buses, racially discriminated against them. The suit claimed black employees faced harassment because of their race and that the incidents that occurred in Navistar's Indianapolis plant date back to the 1980s and continued until 2006. The suit stated that following its filing, a bag of hangman's nooses was found under the plant's human resources director's desk. Racist graffiti found throughout the plant was also allegedly ignored. The graffiti included the "N word" on a paper towel holder, pictures of nooses that included the phrase, "Hang 'em high," a mop painted in imitation of a black woman's hair and a swastika on the end of a wooden stick. The employees' complaints were largely ignored.
In a settlement reached, the company that rakes in millions of dollars in government contracts will be paying out $9 million to 350 black employees for racial discrimination and harassment. [NBC NEWS: RACIAL DISCRIMINATION]
