LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Grand Island, NE
Grand Island, NE: (Aug-08-07) Howard Maxon, a former Hall County emergency manager, brought a lawsuit against Grand Island City, alleging that he was wrongly fired from his job. Maxon filed the suit in June 2007, seeking $216,000 in compensation. Maxon was seeking salary, lost wage increases and lost pension benefits since his 2005 firing. He also was seeking repayment for family health insurance he bought. The suit stated that in firing Maxon, officials said he failed to implement a hike in the surcharge for 911 emergency services. The firing was upheld by a district judge. Subsequently, a Nebraska Supreme Court ruling said the allegations of unsatisfactory performance, incompetence and insubordination did not constitute misconduct under a city ordinance. In a settlement reached, the Grand Island City Council agreed to pay $325,000 to resolve allegations, ending the wrongful termination lawsuit.
