Westchester Medical Center
Staten Island, NY: (Aug-08-07) Joseph Pisani, former executive vice president at Staten Island University Hospital, filed suit against Westchester Medical Center, alleging that he was fired from the hospital without cause after being named in a settlement between the state and University Hospital. Pisani was fired in May 2005 from his position as senior executive vice president and chief administrative officer in connection with Medicaid over billings at another hospital. He had sued to get a $480,000 exit payment. The lawsuit was filed in Aug. 2005 after he was fired. On the day then-Attorney General Eliot Spitzer issued a press release naming the executive in a $76.5 million settlement with University Hospital. The complaint detailed an alleged Medicaid over billing scheme at Staten Island University Hospital, where Pisani had been an executive. Pisani and other top executives were repeatedly warned about illegal billing practices but continued them anyway, according to the civil complaint.
Pisani's lawsuit also named Richard Berman, chairman of the medical center's board of directors and hospital spokeswoman, Kara Bennorth, claiming that their statements to the media were intended to stigmatize him and destroy his reputation. In a settlement reached, Westchester Medical Center agreed to pay Pisani $333,000 plus legal fees to resolve litigation. [THE JOURNAL NEWS: VICE PRESIDENT FIRED]
