Franklin, TN
Franklin, TN: (Aug-13-07) Two black Franklin firefighters, Ricky Cotton and Greg Baltimore, brought charges against the city and top city officials, claiming that they faced racial discrimination while at work. The lawsuits were first filed in 2006 by Cotton and Baltimore, alleging that they were passed over for promotion because they are black, among other claims.
In a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay the two firefighters $500,000, covering the cost of their attorneys' fees and giving one of the men a promotion. Baltimore, who was first hired in 1992, will be promoted to assistant fire chief no later than Aug. 31, 2007. The lawsuit reached settlement a month before it was set to be heard by a judge. The settlement was revised from an offer aldermen made in July 2007 to pay $450,000 plus attorneys' fees to settle all of the racial discrimination lawsuits facing the city.
