Rensselaer County, NY
Troy, NY: (Aug-13-07) Jeffry Jackson, former Rensselaer County Director of Real Property Tax Services, brought a lawsuit against the county, alleging that he was retaliated against because he spoke out regarding irregularities in tax collections. Jackson, who served under former county Executive Henry Zwack, alleged that his employment with the county was terminated by Zwack's successor Kathy Jimino after 27 years for speaking out under the former administration. Jackson was let go just after Jimino took office. The suit alleged that Zwack directed Jimino not to reappoint Jackson after he repeatedly told Zwack that the county was violating state law by creating a county law removing the job of tax mapping from the Bureau of Tax Services. The dispute is said to have gotten ugly in January 2000 when, according to Jackson, Zwack summoned Jackson into his office and screamed obscenities at him as publicity swirled around a series of bureaucratic missteps that Zwack had blamed on Jackson. In a settlement reached, the county agreed to pay Jackson $125,000, its insurance carrier will pay a further $60,000 to resolve the lawsuit.
