LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION
Landrum, SC
Landrum, SC: (Aug-16-07) Three former police officers Scott White, Tim Kelley, and Steve Alexander, filed suit against the city, alleging that they were wrongly fired. The city stated that the officers were fired for going against the city's employee policy. The firings came after the officers "blew the whistle" on alleged wrong doings in the police department, including alleged ticket fixing. A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigation was requested by the city shortly after the lawsuit was filed. The investigation resulted in no criminal charges. After the lawsuit was filed, council member James Conner resigned his position. He said he disagreed with other council members that the officers should be fired. Then city administrator Dianna Gracely also resigned near that time, although she never stated the allegations as reason for her resigning. City council agreed that the officers were rightfully terminated. The three officers unsuccessfully appealed the city's decision and then filed suit against the city. In a settlement reached, the City of Landrum has agreed to pay $160,000 to resolve the lawsuit.
