Topeka Best Western Motel
Topeka, KS: (Aug-17-07) Brooke Sonntag, a former employee of Topeka Best Western Motel, filed suit against the establishment alleging that she was subjected to discrimination while at work. The federal suit said Sonntag was a manager at a Topeka Best Western and was ordered by owner Eldon Thorman not to hire coloreds, Mexicans, or members of any non-white group to work the front desk. The suit stated that Sonntag refused and hired an African American assistant manager as well as Hispanic workers. She was later fired when she became pregnant with her first child. Sonntag alleged that it was unconstitutional to retaliate if an employee refused to engage in race discrimination and illegal to deny employment to a pregnant employee. In a settlement reached in the US District Court in Kansas, the owners of Topeka Best Western Motel were ordered to pay Brooke Sonntag $325,000, ending the lawsuit.
