Ypsilanti Township, MI
Ypsilanti Township, MI: (Aug-22-07) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit against the township on behalf of Carissa Watson, a township employee, alleging that she was discriminated against on the basis of her race. The suit was filed in January 2007 through the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. Watson, who is black, alleged that a township board member made a racial remark about her and wanted her disciplined in connection with an incident in August 2006. She alleged that after the incident was discussed at a township board meeting, she has been treated differently than two non-black co-workers and was harassed by her supervisor because of her race.
In a settlement reached, Ypsilanti Township trustees agreed to pay Watson $14,000 to resolve the issue. Sources state that the settlement includes a $10,000 payment and about $4,000 for pay adjustment and benefits during the 11 weeks that Watson has been off the job on disability leave related to the alleged harassment. The pay adjustment makes up the difference between disability pay and what she would have been making. Watson will be returning to her job at an unspecified time.
