Necessary Objects
New York, NY: (Aug-28-07) State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo brought a labor law violations lawsuit against trendy clothing line Necessary Objects and its subcontractor, Thomas Chan. The suit alleged that the set up violated the state labor law when it underpaid its employees, cutting back on the mandated holidays and paid vacation. Thomas Chan operated Xorex Production and Wynner Production on 36th St. in Brooklyn, and Bergen Production on Chrystie St. in Manhattan. One worker, Wei Qun Chen, claimed that the clothes she made sold at Macy's for $30 and $40, while she got $1 to $2 per item, if at all. For five years, Chen was a seamstress for Chan. Chen said she turned in weekly time sheets, but usually got paid for half the work she did, about $800 a month. In a rare move, the state found both, the manufacturer, Necessary Objects, and the sweatshop owner at fault.
In a settlement reached, the defendants agreed to pay seven workers, who toiled up to 14 hours a day, seven days a week $160,000. The settlement will be regulated by the state attorney general's office. In the negotiated settlement, neither Necessary Objects nor Thomas Chan admitted any wrongdoing.
