Tacoma, WA: (Aug-29-07) Retired assistant police chief Ray Roberts brought a lawsuit against the city of Tacoma, alleging that he was forced to retire because his superior, David Brame, threatened to demote him. Roberts was an assistant chief when Brame was appointed to the chief's position in 2001. In summer 2002, Brame told Roberts he planned to demote him to captain. Roberts knew the move would significantly reduce his salary and pension benefits. Roberts asked Brame why he was being demoted. Roberts claimed that he abruptly retired, preserving his higher salary as assistant chief. He never reached the 30 years of service he had hoped would cap his career, which would have increased his pension. His departure also prevented him from receiving a scheduled raise for all assistant chiefs.
In his 2004 lawsuit, Roberts argued that he was wrongly fired and that Brame, known for his mastery of budgetary details, took pleasure in causing him financial pain. He sought $500,000 in lost wages and benefits. In a settlement reached, Roberts, a 29-year veteran of the department, will receive $205,000 plus reasonable attorney's fees to be determined at a later hearing. [NEWS TRIBUNE: RETIRED POLICE CHIEF]
