Seal Fast and Metrohose

Roanoke, VA: (Sep-10-07) Oscar Allen, an employee of Atlas Industrial Services, a commercial cleaning company south of Richmond, brought a lawsuit against Seal Fast, a Houston-based manufacturer and wholesaler and retailer Metrohose, after a high-pressure nozzle, imported from Taiwan, disintegrated in Allen's hands. The impact of its shrapnel shattered bones, parted flesh, knocked out teeth and split the roof of Allen's mouth. The suit claimed that on April 5, 2005, Allen was washing concrete floors at the Anheuser-Busch brewery near Williamsburg. He used the brass nozzle to direct water flowing at a pressure of about 300 pounds per square inch and which suddenly blew up. Surgeons rebuilt Allen's face using part of his rib and screws and sutures, but could do little to fix the brain trauma. The injury affected Allen's memory, his concentration and his ability to process information.

In a settlement reached with Seal Fast, the wholesaler that imported the nozzle, and retailer Metrohose, which sold the nozzle to Allen's employer, Atlas Industrial Services, the two companies agreed to pay $4 million, with Metrohose paying $500,000 of the settlement.
