Part-Time Officer
Corunna, MI: (Sep-20-07) Angelo Panos, a part-time police officer, brought a lawsuit against the city, alleging that he faced retaliation when he was passed over for a full-time position in mid-2005. Panos, who filed the lawsuit in 2006, stated that he arrested City Manager Joe Sawyer for drunk driving. He claimed that he did not get promoted because the city was angry with him for arresting Sawyer for drunk driving in February of 2006. The lawsuit also claimed Panos' employment with the city was threatened on multiple instances - once when he had no shifts scheduled for a six-week period about two months after arresting Sawyer and once when the city attempted to have him criminally charged for racial discrimination early last year.
As part of a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay Angelo Panos $25,000 to resolve the lawsuit. The city has four part-time officers and three full-time officers. Former Genesee County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Nick Chiros was hired for the full-time position Panos applied for. [ARGUS PRESS DAILY: OFFICER RETALIATION]
