Bus Drivers' Overtime
Dallas, TX: (Sep-29-07) Several bus drivers brought a lawsuit against the Garland School District, alleging that they weren't properly paid overtime. The bus drivers claimed in the suit filed on Jan. 11, 2006, that they had not been paid for overtime, particularly time they spent preparing buses, cleaning buses, and taking students on special trips. The school district denied the allegations in court filings, but because the case did not go to court there are no details from testimony. Sources stated that the district settled a similar case with 36 bus drivers for $149,000 in 2005.
As part of a settlement reached, for the second time in recent years, the Garland School District agreed to a payout to resolve wage related allegations. The federal district court has not approved the agreement. The district filed a settlement agreeing to pay more than 30 school bus drivers $65,000 in back wages and overtime. The settlement agreement stipulates that neither side will discuss the case. The settlement also says the agreement is not an admission of wrongdoing. Under the agreement, the plaintiffs and other drivers who file a claim will split about $45,500, after attorney fees are paid. Other drivers not originally part of the suit may be added to the settlement, according to court papers. [DALLAS MORNING NEWS: BUS DRIVER OVERTIME]
