Jack Kerouac Biography
New York, NY: (Sep-28-07) Penguin Group USA Inc. brought a lawsuit against author Douglas Brinkley, alleging that the writer breached contract by failing to deliver a biography on Beat Generation writer Jack Kerouac. Penguin stated that it had sued Brinkley, who is also a history teacher at Houston's Rice University, because he failed to finish the book in time to publish it this September, the 50th anniversary of Kerouac's autobiographical novel "On the Road." The publisher said it contracted with Brinkley in 1998 for the biography, but he failed to deliver it by the final deadline of June 30, 2006. Brinkley claimed that he and Kerouac's estate, which gave him access to the writer's papers, had divided the $200,000 advance evenly. In a settlement reached, Brinkley agreed to return the advance that Penguin paid him for the book. John Sampas, the Kerouac estate's executor, agreed to return its half as well.
