Illegal Music Downloading

Chicago, IL: (Oct-04-07) The Recording Industry of America and six major music labels filed a lawsuit against Jammie Thomas, a single mother from Minnesota, alleging that she illegally shared 24 songs online. Faced with the suit, Thomas, 30, was the first among more than 26,000 people sued by the world's most powerful recording companies to refuse a settlement. Records stated that she turned down an offer to pay a few thousands dollars in fines and instead took the case to court. In her defense, Thomas stated that SafeNet, a contractor employed by the recording industry to patrol the Internet for copyrighted material, wrongfully targeted her. Thomas, an employee of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, an Indian tribe, reached a settlement, agreeing to pay the court ordered sum of $9,250 fine for each of 24 shared songs cited in the case. Thomas's attorney claimed that she had racked up some $60,000 in legal fees because she refused to be bullied, but finally acquiesced to the $220,000 payout. [YAHOO: DOWNLOADED MUSIC]
