Salon Discrimination
Asheville, NC: (Oct-17-07) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought a lawsuit against SmartStyle Family Hair Salon, alleging that the salon religiously discriminated against its employees. SmartStyle has locations at Wal-Mart stores across North Carolina. The EEOC lawsuit was filed in US District Court and claimed that SmartStyle failed to accommodate employee Rebecca Spain by denying her request to come to work after noon on Sundays so that she could attend church services. The EEOC stated that such discrimination violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As part of a settlement reached, SmartStyle agreed to pay Rebecca Spain $20,000 and other relief.
