Officer Retaliation
Nassau, NY: (Oct-19-07) Patricia Luca, a corrections officer, brought a federal lawsuit against the county, its police department, and the civil service commission, alleging that they kept her from becoming a police officer in retaliation for her earlier lawsuit. The Nassau corrections officer of 12 years had earlier won a settlement from the sheriff's department for sexual harassment. Luca suit claimed that because of her previous lawsuit she was harassed by the police officers investigating her background, and that because the civil service commission marked her as "non-select," she not only was rejected by the county police but also by several village departments, including Sands Point, Port Washington, Hempstead, Old Brookville, Lake Success, Rockville Centre and Kensington. As part of a settlement reached, Luca, 38, stands to get a compensatory award of $150,000 from an eight-member federal jury.
