Middle School Principal
Jackson, MS: (Oct-23-07) Chastain Middle School Principal Michael Ellis brought a lawsuit against Jackson Public Schools, alleging that he was terminated after he exposed Superintendent Earl Watkins's sexual misdemeanors. Ellis was Chastain's principal for 2 1/2 years before he was fired in December 2006. Superintendent Watkins said he fired Ellis after an audit found Ellis had doctored Chastain's payroll. Ellis stated that the audit was launched only after he accused Watkins of sexual harassment. He and his wife sued the district in federal court in January 2007 while awaiting his termination hearing to begin. As part of a settlement reached, Jackson Public Schools agreed to pay Michael and Rachel Ellis $350,000 to resolve the allegations. Sources stated that as of Aug. 31, the district had spent $414,000 on legal fees on the case. Jackson Public Schools hope that its insurance provider will pay the minimum $764,000 spent on the legal fees associated with fighting the lawsuit.
