Claims Investigator Overtime
Palo Alto, CA: (Nov-01-07) Casey O'Neill, former Palo Alto claims investigator, brought charges against the city in August 2005, alleging that she was owed overtime wages for her work in the city attorney's office. She later alleged that she faced retaliation after she filed suit against the city. Following a series of cost-benefit analysis, the city agreed to settle, awarding O'Neill $335,000 in exchange for her retiring in June 2008.
In the settlement, O'Neill will receive $51,000 for unpaid overtime, $51,000 for damages, $190,000 for attorneys' fees and $42,000 in severance pay. The settlement agreement was signed by O'Neill and by City Manager Frank Benest. It was made public following the court's sign-off. Though the city did not admit any wrongdoing, it agreed to the settlement to avoid the risks and costs of protracted litigation. [PALO ALTO ONLINE: INVESTIGATOR OVERTIME]
