Nurse Pregnancy Discrimination
Wailuku, HI: (Nov-06-07) The federal government brought a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit against Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, on behalf of a Kaiser nurse who was rejected for a job on Maui in 2005. The suit, filed by the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) alleged that managers at Kaiser's Wailuku clinic withdrew a job offer to Margaret McIlroy, a registered labor and delivery nurse, when they discovered she was pregnant. Records stated that McIlroy was set to transfer to Maui from a Kaiser clinic in Southern California for a supervisory nursing position. Two weeks before starting her new job, she told Kaiser about her pregnancy and received a voicemail message soon after telling her she no longer had the Maui job. As part of a settlement reached, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan agreed to pay the federal government $180,000 to resolve the pregnancy discrimination lawsuit.
