Athletic Director Severance
Grand Forks, ND: (Nov-07-07) Tom Buning, former University of North Dakota athletic director, brought a lawsuit against the university over severance issues. In a settlement reached, in exchange for Buning's resignation, the University of North Dakota agreed to pay 14 months severance pay, about $144,000, and vacation pay of about $10,000. Sources stated that Buning did not give a reason for his resignation. Records show that Buning took a leave of absence in mid-September, after getting a low rating on a survey of athletic department employees.
The trouble began when Buning said in a mid-September letter to UND vice president Phil Harmeson, that he and his staff were overworked and did not have enough money to make a proper transition to Division I. Buning said he also objected to reporting to Harmeson instead of to UND President Charles Kupchella. Buning, who was hired at UND in June 2005, after four years as associate athletic director at Army, stated that both sides had reached the settlement amicably. [KQCD NEWS: SEVERANCE SETTLEMENT]
