Unsolicited Marketing

Los Angeles, CA: (Nov-15-07) The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) brought charges against Ameriquest Mortgage Co. and ADT Security Services Inc., alleging that the companies made telemarketing calls to people who were on the Do Not Call registry. The suit claimed that the companies made unsolicited calls to numbers on the registry. Though the companies did not admit any wrongdoing, they agreed to pay a total of nearly $8 million as part of the settlement that was brokered by the FTC.

Sources claimed that since the registry was established in 2003, consumers have put more than 145 million phone numbers on the list to block calls from telemarketers. Ameriquest Mortgage, which was one of the nation's largest sub-prime mortgage lenders before that sector crashed, agreed to pay a $1 million civil penalty. Boca Raton-based ADT Security Services, which sells residential and business alarm systems nationwide, will pay $2 million. [TIMES-NEWS: UNSOLICITED TELEMARKETING]
