Cancer Discrimination
This is a settlement for the Discrimination lawsuit.
Visalia, CA: (Nov-15-07) Kim McGee, former vice president of Tucoemas Federal Credit Union, brought a lawsuit against the union, alleging that she was demoted and later pressured to quit after she underwent breast cancer treatment. Documents show that McGee was diagnosed with cancer in 2003, and that her bosses hassled her to return to work right after her last post-surgery chemotherapy treatment even though she said she needed more time to recover. The suit stated that McGee returned to work despite being weak and sick from the treatment, and later was demoted to bank manager and had her pay and her work hours cut, depriving her of health insurance. McGee said in an interview in September that the credit union's treatment resulted in stress that her doctors said was affecting her health, so she left her job in November 2003. As part of a settlement reached, McGee was awarded $3.1 million in damages, including $1.2 million in punitive damages, ending the workplace discrimination lawsuit.
