Sergeant Termination
Athens County, OH: (Nov-18-07) Bryan Cooper, a sheriff's sergeant, brought a civil rights lawsuit against Athens County Sheriff Vern Castle, alleging wrongful termination. Records show that Cooper sued Castle in 2006 after Cooper was fired in 2004. The sergeant claimed his firing was in retaliation because Cooper supported Castle's political opponent, Pat Kelly, in the sheriff's race that year.
As part of a settlement reached, sources stated that the lawsuit was resolved after the county agreed to pay Bryan Cooper $75,000. Under the agreement, a confidentiality clause forbade both parties from talking about the terms of the deal. The amount will be paid by the county's insurance carrier. The settlement stated that the sheriff denied any allegations of wrongful conduct or liability, but agreed to the settlement to avoid the costs and risks of prolonged litigation.
