LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION

City Employees,

New Orleans, LA: (Nov-20-07) More than 36 employees brought charges against the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana, alleging that they faced racial discrimination. Records show that of the 36 employees, 35 were white and one Hispanic. The workers claimed that they were fired and replaced by black employees shortly after Eddie Jordan took over as the city's first black district attorney in 2003. Jordan resigned earlier in November 2007.

As part of a settlement reached, sources stated that the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana would pay the bulk of a $3.4 million racial discrimination judgment against the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office. Under the agreement, the city would pay about one-third of the judgment; more than $1.1 million. The state would pay about $1.6 million, subject to approval by a legislative committee later this year. The District Attorney's Office, which already has paid $300,000, would pay another $300,000.
