School House Master
Lowell, MA: (Dec-02-07) Patricia Kealy, a former Lowell High School house master, brought charges against the city, alleging that she faced gender discrimination while on the job. The suit stated that Kealy, who worked at Lowell High School from 1964 to 2003, was passed over three times for the now-defunct position starting in 1986, despite qualifications that she said made her a more desirable candidate than the men ultimately hired. Records show that Lowell High School Headmaster William Samaras was the first man who was chosen instead of Kealy and he also appointed the second man, David Moorehouse, who held a master of Business Administration and a doctorate in curriculum. As part of a settlement reached, following the Massachusetts Appeals Court's backing of Kealy's allegations, the city agreed to pay over $1 million in damages to resolve the gender discrimination lawsuit.
