Sheriff-Elect Termination
Pittstown, PA: (Dec-05-07) Former police officer and Luzerne County Sheriff-elect Michael Savokinas brought a lawsuit against the township, alleging that officials wrongfully terminated him. The suit, filed in 2006, claimed that supervisors violated Savokinas' civil rights by not providing him with a hearing before opting not to rehire him as a part-time police officer in 2006. Township officials stated that Savokinas, who works a full-time job as a police officer for the Canadian Pacific Railroad, was not rehired because he had only limited availability. They maintained Savokinas was a substitute employee and thus they did not need to provide him with a hearing.
As part of a settlement reached, the township's insurance company agreed to pay a $125,000 payout resolving the wrongful termination suit. The township did not admit any wrongdoing, and claimed the settlement was to avoid the costs and risks of continued litigation. [TIMES LEADER: OFFICER FIRED]
