Worker Standards

San Antonio, TX: (Dec-05-07) Several Cameron County workers brought charges against Pioneer Hi-Bred International, an Iowa-based seed corn producer, alleging that the company provided substandard housing and unsafe transportation. The suit, filed in June 2006 by 27 workers, further claimed that the company and its labor agent shortchanged them on wages and bonuses. The workers said agent Francisco Coronado lured them to Indiana with false promises of lucrative wages and a large end-of-season bonus.

As part of a mediated settlement reached, Pioneer Hi-Bred agreed to pay $81,000 to the migrant workers to resolve litigation. Sources claim that the recent settlement is Pioneer's second settlement of a suit by workers filed in 2007. [SAN ANTONIO NEWS: WORKER STANDARDS]
