Back Wages
Barstow, CA: (Dec-13-07) Eddie Varela, former chief, brought charges against the Barstow Fire Protection District, alleging that the district failed to pay him due wages, as well as discriminated, harassed and retaliated against him. The suit, filed in August 2006, specifically named Dallis Harris, a fire district board member. In 2001, Varela filed the suit charging Harris with libel and slander and called for his removal from office. The suit was filed in response to a sexual harassment complaint made against Varela and former fire board members Steve Stewart and Mark Howard. Sources claimed that a settlement was reached between the two parties, resolving the dispute. Under the deal, the district agreed to pay Varela $90,000 for the money owed, though the district refuted the discrimination, harassment and retaliation charges. The current fire chief, Darrell Jauss, who took over for Varela after he retired on medical leave in 2005, said the district is happy to have the situation resolved.
