Telemarketing Timeshare
Orlando, FL: (Dec-18-07) The Florida Attorney General's office brought charges against Equity Marketing Corp., alleging that the Altamonte Springs-based company, which operates under the name Resort Equity Marketing, used deceptive marketing and advertising tactics. The suit claimed that the company used misleading telemarketing pitches to obtain clients for its timeshare resale advertising business. The company was accused of promising two free airline tickets to several predetermined locations if it failed to sell a customer's timeshare within 180 days. The attorney general's office says Resort Equity Marketing failed to advise customers that the airline vouchers came with very restrictive conditions, including additional fees or required stays at specific hotels at very high rates. The lawsuit was filed after the AG's office received complaints from over 100 customers.
As part of a settlement reached, the company will refund $50,000 to customers and will reimburse the attorney general's office $45,000 for the cost of the investigation. Further, the company agreed to modify its solicitation and marketing techniques to comply with the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and the Florida Telemarketing Act.
