Employee Life Insurance
Des Moines, IA: (Dec-27-07) The estate of Mark White, a former city employee, brought charges against the city of Ankeny, alleging that White had a chance to get his job back but died before he could. Sources close to the case claimed that the suit was filed because White would have been eligible for $60,000 in life insurance had he been a city employee at the time of his death. Records show that White died in July 2007 from complications from chronic alcohol abuse. He was 46 at the time. Assistant City Manager Jim Spradling said White was let go because he had failed to meet the criteria of a last chance agreement that was established in 2004. Spradling declined to say what led to that agreement on the grounds that it was a personnel matter.
As part of a settlement reached between the parties, Ankeny city officials recently agreed to pay a $10,000 settlement to the estate of Mark White, resolving the dispute. [DES MOINES REGISTER: LIFE INSURANCE]
