University Basketball Coach
Muncie, IN: (Jan-23-08) Ronny Thompson, former Ball State basketball coach, brought a lawsuit against the university, alleging that he faced racial harassment while on the job. Sources stated that Thompson, a son of Hall of Fame coach John Thompson, resigned in July after alleging racial harassment and retaliation by the university for his complaints of harassment. In its defense, Ball State claimed that unprofessional behavior by Thompson tainted a report to the NCAA on possible rules violations and contributed to Thompson's decision to resign. The university said that Thompson and his staff had broken NCAA rules in the summer of 2006 and in May 2007 by attending voluntary off-season team workouts. It also said they had lied about their involvement.
As part of a settlement reached, the dispute was resolved after the university agreed to pay Thompson $200,000. Apart from the monetary payout, Thompson also received an apology from the university. [SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: FIRED COACH]
