Garment Workers
Honolulu, HI: (Jan-23-08) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission brought charges against Rifu Apparel and three affiliated companies, alleging that they discriminated against their employees because they were pregnant. The federal government said that the four Saipan garment manufacturers violated federal law by refusing to renew the employment contracts of pregnant garment workers.
As part of a settlement reached, the companies agreed to pay the seven women a total of $120,000 for discriminating against them. Additionally, the settlement ordered the companies to train supervisors and submit to monitoring by the commission. The companies denied any admission of guilt, but agreed to the settlement to avoid the costs of litigation. [KITV NEWS: PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION]
