Company Harassment
High Point, NC: (Jan-25-08) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought a lawsuit against Henredon Furniture Industries, on behalf of the company's African American employees, alleging that the company harassed employees because of their race. The suit claimed that from about 1998 through January 2006, the employees at Henredon's High Point manufacturing plant were subjected to racial slurs and name calling as well as threats by hangman's nooses that were displayed at the plant. EEOC officials stated that the harassment occurred almost daily at Henredon Furniture, a subsidiary of Furniture Brands International, which operated a furniture plant in High Point until January 2006.
As part of a settlement reached, the company agreed to pay $465,000 to resolve allegations. Additionally, apart from the monetary payout, the three year consent decree includes injunctive relief enjoining Henredon Furniture from engaging in racial harassment or retaliation; requires anti-discrimination training; requires the posting of a notice about the settlement; and requires the company to report complaints of racial harassment to the EEOC for monitoring.
