Softball Coach
Thomasville, GA: (Jan-28-08) Cara Hankinson, a former softball coach, brought charges against the Thomas County School System, alleging that she was discriminated against and harassed because of her gender. Hankinson, a teacher in the system for 22 years, filed a lawsuit in US District Court in October 2005 after she was fired as softball coach in December 2003 after three years in that position. In the lawsuit, Hankinson claimed discrimination under Title IX of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and that she was the victim of intimidation, deceit, dishonesty and collusion by the school system.
Sources stated that the suit was filed following a complaint lodged with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Officials stated that as part of a settlement reached, the school System's insurance carrier, Utica Mutual Insurance Group, agreed to make an undisclosed payout to Hankinson, resolving the lawsuit.
