Damaged Billboards

Bartow, FL: (Feb-6-08) Bartow County brought a lawsuit against Lamar Advertising over the billboard company's decision to replace 57 hurricane damaged billboards in 2004 without getting proper permits. Records show that Lamar sued the county after code enforcement officials cited Lamar. Sources close to the case stated that the case had reached settlement after county commissioners voted 4-1.

Under the settlement, from which Commissioner Randy Wilkinson dissented, Lamar will have to obtain permits for all of the work, pay twice the permit fee, bring all signs up to code and be prohibited from upgrading any of the signs. County officials said that Lamar will have to pay $35,010 for the permits, to resolve the lawsuit. County commissioners stated that they would have liked to have fought Lamar in court, but it would involve gambling with taxpayers' money even though they felt outraged over Lamar's actions.
