Woman's Basketball Coach
Fresno, CA: (Feb-14-08) Stacy Johnson-Klein, former Fresno State women's basketball coach, brought a lawsuit against Fresno State University, alleging that she was wrongfully terminated. She filed suit three years after she was fired, accusing university officials of sexual harassment and discrimination. Johnson-Klein stated that the school retaliated against her because she spoke up for her female players. In their defense, the university claimed that Johnson-Klein was fired because she violated NCAA rules.
Sources close to the case said that the parties had come to a settlement agreement, aimed at resolving the dispute. Under the terms of the deal, Stacy Johnson-Klein agreed to accept a $6.6 million dollar settlement in her wrongful termination lawsuit. Records show that Fresno County Judge Donald Black reduced Johnson-Klein's award by nearly two-thirds. In December a jury had awarded the former coach more than $19 million dollars in damages. Johnson-Klein told sources that although she was disappointed by the reduction, the fact that the jury unanimously sided with her shows there needs to be changes at Fresno State. She says she plans to write a book about her experience to help other women in the workplace. Mostly, though, she's looking forward to the future. [KSEE 24 NEWS: FIRED COACH]
