Music Teacher
Palm Springs, CA: (Feb-21-08) Darlene Romano, a former teacher, brought charges against the College of the Desert, alleging that she faced discrimination and retaliation by the school and its former president, Maria Sheehan. Records stated that Romano, who has taught music at the school for more than 20 years, originally filed the suit in 2002 and an Orange County court dismissed 10 of 11 charges against the school in June 2007. Romano said she had been hired as the school's permanent associate dean of instruction in June 2001, but the board of trustees voted early in 2002 not to renew her contract, prompting her to file the suit. Sources close to the case stated that as part of a settlement reached, the long-running legal struggle between College of the Desert and Darlene Romano was resolved with a $660,000 payout. College officials said under the terms of the agreement, neither the school nor Romano will discuss the terms of the settlement or issues surrounding it.
