Employee Discrimination
Philadelphia, PA: (Mar-02-08) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought a lawsuit against Vanguard Group Inc., alleging that the Malvern, PA mutual fund giant racially discriminated against Raymond Ross of Maple Glen, PA, one of its employees. The EEOC brought the suit on behalf of Ross. The suit claimed that Ross' information technology career at Vanguard began in 1993 and was going well until he switched to a new department in 2002. He began complaining that he was being treated less favorably and discriminated against based on his race. Following the complaints, Ross alleged that he began experiencing acts of retaliation, including unfavorable changes in his work conditions and assignments from the managers he accused of race discrimination. Records show that his employment was terminated in 2003 and he now runs a computer consulting company.
Sources close to the case revealed that the parties had reached a settlement in which Vanguard agreed to pay $500,000 to resolve the lawsuit by EEOC. Additionally, company spokespersons said that Vanguard will implement anti-discrimination, anti-harassment and anti-retaliation policies and procedures. Vanguard will be committed to providing a workplace that is free from unlawful retaliation and all forms of discrimination. The company also stated that it did not admit wrongdoing in the settlement.
