Airline Baggers Win
Detroit, MI: (Mar-06-08) The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, a union that represents baggage handlers, brought a $10 million claim against Northwest Airlines Corp. related to worker grievances filed in the company's bankruptcy case. Sources close to the case revealed that the parties had reached a settlement, in which the union will get a $3 million unsecured claim against the Eagan, MN, based airlines and a $1 million administrative claim under its reorganization plan.
The pay out resolves all the grievances filed by the union's workers before the airline filed for bankruptcy. The union is said to represent about 11,000 Northwest employees. Records show that Northwest emerged from bankruptcy in May 2007, swapping new stock for debt. The company will make a "catch-up distribution" to the union if the settlement is approved.
