Teachers Paid
Los Angeles, CA: (Mar-06-08) United Teachers Los Angeles, a group representing nearly 6,700 teachers, brought a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Unified School District, alleging that they were shortchanged by a faulty payroll system. The charges stated that the teachers lost out when they were underpaid due to a new computerized payroll system that was installed in early 2007.
Beginning in February 2007, employees often were overpaid or underpaid, and that the discrepant practice continued for most of the year, leading the union to file the lawsuit against the district. As part of a settlement reached, the School District agreed to resolve the allegations by agreeing to pay the aggrieved teachers 8% interest for their troubles.
Under the deal, nearly 6,700 teachers represented by United Teachers Los Angeles that were shorted will get 8% interest for six months on underpayments caused by the faulty computerized payroll system. The L.A. Unified School District promised in the settlement not to act against union members who boycotted faculty meetings. The district also agreed to drop an unfair labor practice against the union. [KFMB NEWS: LA SCHOOLS AND TEACHERS SETTLE LAWSUIT OVER PAYROLL PROBLEMS]
