Firefighter Payback
Berwyn, IL: (Mar-12-08) Jerry Marzullo, a Berwyn firefighter, brought charges against the city, alleging that he was wrongly terminated from his job, after a grand jury indicted him for allegedly kicking and punching a man outside a Forest Park bar. The suit stated that Marzullo was a firefighter for more than four years before taking a job with the Cook County state's attorney's office in May 2004. About a month later, he applied for a leave of absence from the Fire Department. The altercation occurred about a year after, and he was forced to resign following the indictment.
Court records show that an arbitrator ordered the city to pay Marzullo his lost wages and rehire him more than two years ago. The city appealed the decision twice and lost, spending more than $12,000 in legal fees. As part of settlement agreement reached in the case, the now acquitted firefighter received $160,000 in back pay after aldermen voted for him, overriding the mayor's veto to deny the settlement.
