Police Harassment
West Point, MS: (Mar-18-08) Joe Huffman, a District 5 employee, brought a federal lawsuit in US District Court against District 5 Supervisor David Winfield and Clay County Sheriff Laddie Huffman, alleging that employment harassment and discrimination. The suit claimed that Laddie Huffman removed Joe Huffman from his position as a narcotics agent and forced him to give up his FBI contract agent position. Joe Huffman said that the sheriff illegally tapped and recorded phone conversations at the department. He stated that the sheriff also demanded that he turn over his law enforcement diary, which Huffman refused to do. Following the harassment, Huffman resigned from the department in March 2004 and applied for a job at the West Point Police Department, which he was later denied. The job was denied to Huffman despite his being an experienced and outstanding narcotics officer, a fact that was attested by former Police Chief Bill Gibson.
Sources on both sides stated that the parties had reached a settlement in the case, in which the county awarded Joe Huffman $220,000, resolving the lawsuit. Records show that Huffman is currently employed at Mississippi Department of Correction in Starkville. [WCBI NEWS: SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED IN CLAY COUNTY]
