Press Apology

London, England: (Mar-18-08) Kate and Gerry McCann brought charges against The Daily Express and Daily Star, two newspapers, after news coverage of over 100 articles published in 2007 by Express Newspapers and their two respective Sunday sister editions, which were libelous in nature. The articles about Madeleine, the couple's missing toddler's disappearance shortly before her fourth birthday, triggered a worldwide publicity campaign by her parents, who were classified as formal suspects by the Portuguese police in September 2007. Sources say that no sign of Madeleine has been found as yet and no charges have been made against any suspect, though the inquiry is yet on.

In a recent announcement made for both, The Daily Express and Daily Star, spokespersons stated that the papers have agreed to pay damages to the parents of the missing toddler, as part of a settlement. Additionally, The Daily Express and Daily Star will publish the apologies in their newspapers for insinuating that the duo was involved in their daughter's disappearance.

Spokespersons for the Find Madeleine Fund stated that all the damages paid would be donated to the fund, which was set up in the wake of Madeleine's disappearance from a Portuguese resort while the family was on holiday there in May 2007. The BBC revealed that, as part of the terms of the settlement, a lawyer for Express Newspapers will also read out an apology before a High Court judge.
