Nurse Blows Whistle
San Joaquin County, CA: (Mar-19-08) Melinda Lagorio-Sanchez, a former county public health nurse, brought a lawsuit against San Joaquin County alleging that she was wrongfully terminated in February 2006 after blowing the whistle on Kathleen Tully, program manager of the county Public Health Services Department. She stated that Tully failed to file reports of patients with Hepatitis A and other diseases in a timely manner.
The suit, filed Jun. 23, 2006, was resolved after both sides agreed to enter into a settlement agreement, putting an end to further litigation. Under the terms of the agreement, county officials confirmed that the San Joaquin County agreed to pay Melinda Lagorio-Sanchez $70,000. Chief Deputy County Counsel Kristen Hegge, speaking on behalf of the Board of Supervisors, said that the settlement was an economic decision, seeing that Lagorio-Sanchez had a good case.
