Executive Director Fired
Detroit, MI: (Mar-21-08) Former National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) executive director Ted Saskin brought a lawsuit against the NHLPA, alleging wrongful termination. The suit claimed that Saskin was fired in May 2007, for accessing the private e-mail accounts of various players. He was accused of reading the private mail of particularly those who opposed his hiring as the association's executive director.
In a recent development in the case, sources stated that the lawsuit was resolved after the NHLPA agreed to a financial payout with Saskin. Saskin had allegedly sought what was left on the three remaining years of his contract, a reported $6.5 million, but the deal he agreed to paid him about $400,000. Records show that Saskin had also negotiated a clause in his contract calling for a 15-month severance package. Sources estimated that would've added up to just more than $2 million, in case he was fired. But after being terminated with cause, and prolonged litigation in sight, he agreed to accept the $400,000 payout. Spokespersons on both sides refused to discuss the finer details of the settlement agreement. [MICHIGAN LIVE: NHLPA WILL PAY SASKIN $400,000 TO GO AWAY]
