School Superintendent Resigns
Detroit, MI: (Mar-25-08) Chuck Breiner, superintendent of the Howell School District, brought charges against the financially strapped district over his resignation and severance. Records show that the dispute stemmed from investigations the school launched after employees complained about a hostile work environment, and communication issues arose surrounding an alleged sex assault on a school bus.
In his suit, Breiner stated that he did not know about the school bus incident until four months after it happened. Another point of dissension was Breiner's contract, approved in 2005 by a previous school board. The five-year pact rolled over annually if the board didn't take action each year. The existing board did not know of the clause, and it automatically extended in 2006 and 2007. Earlier, the board voted not to extend the pact.
School sources stated that the board would sign a buyout agreement with Breiner, who has been on paid administrative leave since Thanksgiving. In the settlement reached between the parties, sources stated that the Howell school district will pay Superintendent Chuck Breiner $150,000 to leave.
