Back Pay and Overtime Due
Santa Barbara, CA: (Apr-04-08) The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades for District Council 36 brought charges against Ryan's Painting, the business responsible for the painting of the UCSB San Clemente Student Housing Project, alleging that it owed 10 of the workers back pay and other monies. Sources associated with the project stated that the university hired ProWest Constructors to manage the San Clemente Project. ProWest was then responsible for hiring companies such as Ryan's Painting.
Following months of mediated negotiations, officials on both sides stated that the case had reached a settlement, in which the painters will receive all their back pay over the next three months. The agreement stated that Ryan's Painting now owes the 10 employees a total of $87,840.69, although two employees have already received payment. Donna Carpenter, the executive vice chancellor of Administrative Services, claimed that she and other administrators are currently working on a new protocol to mediate business relations between contractors and their employees, so as to ensure that such problems do not surface in the future.
