George Wallace Firing

Hampton, VA: (Apr-21-08) Former Hampton City Manager George Wallace brought a discrimination lawsuit against Hampton City and Council members Ross A. Kearney II, Angela Leary, Charles N. Sapp and Randy Gilliland after being fired in 2005. Wallace filed the suit against the city and four City Council members who voted to fire him, seeking $7.2 million. The suit alleged defamation and discrimination.

City sources and court records indicate that the two sides reached a settlement agreement, in which the allegations were resolved and all claims were dropped. Though the city did not made public as to how much they paid Wallace to resolve his lawsuit, records indicate that the city paid $450,000 to a law firm representing the former City Manager. Wallace stated that his suit sought to establish his constitutional rights and reputation, and that the settlement document speaks for itself. The lawsuit was settled in October 2006 with a confidentiality clause that forbade Wallace or the defendants from talking about the terms of the settlement.

Officials said that the deal has become a political issue because Wallace is one of eight candidates seeking one of three open seats on council. Three of four defendants in the case are also candidates: Mayor Ross A. Kearney II, Charles N. Sapp and Angela Leary. Wallace filed the suit against the city and four City Council members who voted to fire him, seeking $7.2 million. [DAILY PRESS: GEORGE WALLACE GOT $450,000 IN HAMPTON SETTLEMENT]
